Privacy Policy
The short version
- No accounts, no sign-in, no ads, and no analytics or tracking.
- Your pantry, shopping list and preferences are stored only on your phone.
- The camera is used only to read barcodes, live. No photos or video are ever saved or sent.
- To find products and recipes, the app sends barcode numbers, recipe searches, pantry ingredient names and your cuisine and allergy filters to recipe and food databases. Nothing sent identifies you.
- We never sell or share your data for advertising.
1. Overview
Rummage helps you keep track of what's in your kitchen and suggests recipes you can make with it. This policy explains what information the app uses, which permissions it asks for and why, and exactly what leaves your device and where it goes. It's published by Eighty Six Watch, the developer of Rummage.
A paid "Sous Chef" tier is described in the app but is not available yet. If it ever adds accounts or payments, this policy will be updated before that happens.
2. Permissions the app uses
Camera (android.permission.CAMERA) — optional
Used for one thing only: reading the barcode on a product when you tap Scan a barcode, so Rummage can add that item to your pantry. Before Android asks you for camera access, Rummage shows a screen explaining why. The camera is only active while the scanner is open. The image is processed on your phone to read the barcode number, and no photo or video is ever recorded, saved or uploaded.
Scanning is optional. If you don't allow camera access, you can still type items in, and you can turn access off at any time in your phone's Settings.
Internet (android.permission.INTERNET)
Used to look up products and recipes and to load recipe photos, as described in section 5. Android grants this automatically when you install the app; it doesn't give Rummage access to anything on your phone.
Rummage asks for no other permissions — not location, contacts, photos, files, microphone or phone.
3. What we don't collect
There's no sign-up, so none of these are ever requested, read or sent:
4. What's stored on your phone
The following is saved only in the app's private storage on your device:
- Your pantry items, where each is stored, and the ingredients you've added before
- Your shopping list
- Your preferences: the cuisines you've chosen and any allergies you've selected
- The titles of recipes recently shown to you (so suggestions can rotate)
- A count of how many free web recipe searches you've used
We don't operate a database that copies this, and we never see it. Android's app backup is turned off for Rummage, so it isn't copied to a Google backup either. Uninstalling the app, or clearing its storage in Settings, deletes all of it permanently.
5. What we send, and to whom
To find products and recipes, Rummage sends small, specific pieces of information to the services below — only when you use the matching feature. Requests to the recipe services go through a small server we run (hosted on Cloudflare), which adds the access keys those services require. That server doesn't store what you search; it keeps only an anonymous daily count of requests, used to cap costs.
| Service | When | What's sent |
|---|---|---|
| Open Food Facts | You scan a barcode | The barcode number, to look up the product's name and category. |
| TheMealDB | You search for a recipe, or the app finds recipes for your pantry | Your search text, or the names of some of your pantry ingredients (via our server). |
| Spoonacular | The app finds recipes for your pantry | Up to five pantry ingredient names, plus the cuisines and allergies you've selected so unsuitable recipes are excluded (via our server). |
| Anthropic (Claude) | A search finds nothing and you choose to search the web | Your search text, to find a real recipe online (via our server). |
| Recipe photos | Recipes with photos are shown | A request for the photo, loaded directly from TheMealDB's or Spoonacular's image servers. |
| Recipe websites | You tap an "Original recipe" link | Nothing from Rummage — the page opens in your web browser. |
None of these requests includes your name, email, an account, or any device or advertising identifier. Allergy selections are sent only as search filters, never with anything that identifies you. As with any internet request, a service can see your IP address and the time of the request; we don't collect or keep that ourselves. Each service handles requests under its own privacy policy — for example Anthropic's and Cloudflare's.
All of this traffic is encrypted in transit (HTTPS).
6. No ads, analytics or data sales
Rummage contains no advertising, no analytics or tracking tools, and no crash-reporting service. We don't sell, rent or trade any data, and we don't use it for advertising or profiling.
7. Your choices
- Delete your data: clear Rummage's storage in your phone's Settings, or uninstall the app. Either removes everything immediately.
- Camera: deny or remove camera access at any time in Settings; you can still add items by typing.
- Preferences: change or clear your cuisine and allergy selections at any time in the app's Preferences.
8. Children
Rummage isn't directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect personal information from anyone — the app has no way to submit it.
9. Changes to this policy
If what Rummage uses or sends changes, this page will be updated first, with a new effective date at the top.
